Wen Shan, Co-founder and Director at Red Lion Engineering Pty Ltd, an expert Engineering Service Company based in Melbourne servicing Asia OEMs. Wen was born at Changchun of China, has 20 years’ experience in the auto industry both in Australia and China. Immigrated to Australia in late 1995, Ms Shan worked 15 years with General Motor’s Australian subsidiary, GM Holden Ltd. First worked as a project engineer at Holden’s Product development division then progressed to be an engineering manager in the area of cost management. Ms Shan holds a Bachelor of engineering degree from Hefei University and an MBA from the Melbourne University, Australia.  Ms Shan currently serve on the ACES (Australian Cost engineering Society) committee.

Description:

The auto industry operates in a highly competitive global market with thin margins and is a leader in process and cost control. Cost Engineers provide a critical link between engineering, purchasing and finance at all major auto manufacturing companies carrying out vehicle development programs. Cost Engineering utilize well defined tools like Activity-Based Costing, target cost and value engineering through Vehicle development process and assist in achieving OEM’s financial target for vehicle program.

Target Audience:

Target senior project engineers and program managers or engineers with an interest in project management

  • Understand cost control process flow in advanced vehicle development
  • Have a basic knowledge of vehicle component/system costing methodology
  • Understand cost reduction methodology and its role

Course structure and format

Two days

Day 1: Process Flow of cost management

  • Setting vehicle level cost target
  • Setting component/system level cost target
  • Cost management during sourcing process, interact with purchasing and engineering

Three elements of cost management, material, tool and die cost and ED&D cost.  Work through an example of developing project cost for EV vehicles.

Day 2 Basic cost models in automotive parts and example. (Stage 2 of cost management will cover all cost models)

  • How to cost a plastic injection pts? Compression moulding?
  • Costing example

Cost reduction

  • Concept of value stream mapping and cost reduction workshop
